A foreign travel program for eighth grade French language students from Shoreham, New York was developed to provide language speaking practice in Quebec, Canada. The program was designed to allow students to spend as much time as possible speaking the language and interacting with the people. The following "survival through speaking" activities were developed: going up to a stranger and asking directions, ordering food in a restaurant, buying food in a market, purchasing articles in store, going through customs, changing money, finding out about a sporting or cultural event, finding out about train travel, playing soccer with local students, and visiting the local tourist office to find out what the city has to offer. American students also visited a school to meet their French-Canadian peers. A second trip was planned to allow students to compare their growth in facility with the language. A descriptive account of the trip, results of an evaluation of the program, and sample evaluation forms are presented. (SW)
