In this article, the author provides five reasons why teachers should care about John Dewey. John Dewey was an "American Pragmatist philosopher, educator, reformer." Dewey lived a long and amazingly productive life, spanning the turn of the 20th century, from 1859-1952. In addition to lots of writing, he taught at the University of Chicago (where he started a well-known laboratory school) and Columbia University, and he "lectured" everywhere--in both academic and popular venues. Dewey was someone who thought that the school system should be a main part of what allows society to progress. He was always clear on the idea that there was "a child and a curriculum," and the very important role of the teacher was to bring those worlds into meaningful relationship. The author also provides four key ideas that she found to recur in much of Dewey's work, and that she believes are relevant to being a Teaching Artist.
