Using Television Sitcoms to Facilitate Asynchronous Discussions in the Online Communication Course
Tolman, Elizabeth; Asbury, Bryan
Communication Teacher, v26 n1 p10-16 2012
Asynchronous discussions are a useful instructional resource in the online communication course. In discussion groups students have the opportunity to actively participate and interact with students and the instructor. Asynchronous communication allows for flexibility because "participants can interact with significant amounts of time between their exchanges." Course management systems include a discussion feature. Instructors may also use no cost resources such as Zamzar or Google Groups. In this article, the authors describe a teaching activity which outlines how instructors can use television sitcoms such as "The Office," "Friends," and "How I Met Your Mother" to facilitate these discussions. This article includes a rationale for this approach, relevant literature, examples of discussion questions, and assessment options. This assignment can be adapted to a variety of communication courses including, Interpersonal Communication, Communication Theory, and Gender and Communication. The authors have used the assignment in online communication courses. However, the assignment can be adapted to a hybrid or web-enhanced course.
