This article details the authors' research focusing on the perceptions of Brock University students in relation to the namesake of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock. They discuss militarism in education and detail the use of everyday life theory and semiotic analysis, the latter as theory and methodology. They explore their findings which focus on the ways in which the pervasiveness of militaristic representations were perceived by participants as campus givens: General Brock as an important hero, General Brock as a "cool" and meaningful namesake, and un/conscious awareness of semiotic resources. They conclude that the pervasiveness of representations on campus of the namesake General Brock creates a problematic association between the university and war.
