Searching for Resolution in Cultural Dissonance
Drennan, Sarah; Van Bockern, Steve
Reclaiming Children and Youth, v21 n3 p23-26 Fall 2012
In this article, the authors recount their visit to Chiang Mai, a city in northern Thailand, in late January and focus on their search for resolution in cultural dissonance. So much about Thailand was different to them. Although they tend to relish differences, they still find some differences quite challenging. Thai culture is firmly anchored in tradition, deference to authority, and saving face. In this increasingly diverse world, many children are growing up in mixed cultural backgrounds, providing both challenge and opportunity, as seen by an account of a youth with an American mother and a Thai father.
