Assets, Aliens or Asylum Seekers? Immigration and the United Kingdom
Haste, Helen
Prospects: Quarterly Review of Comparative Education, v36 n3 p327-341 Sep 2006
British attitudes toward immigrants are complex. The United Kingdom has received regular waves of immigrants, both political and economic asylum seekers and, especially in recent decades, recruited labor from the former nations of the British Empire. Throughout its history, ambivalence among the Britons is seen due to these developments. In this article, the author examines the data on British attitudes to immigrants. The author considers two areas: research on adult populations; and research on young people. The first gives a picture of the current cultural spectrum; the second articulates this for young people and also provides possible pointers for education. Due to the current context of anxieties about terrorism, the author draws mainly on recent public opinion polls. The first finding is that "race and immigration" fluctuate in the extent to which they are seen as important issues. Concern about immigration surfaced in other contexts in public opinion polls. The extent of concern about immigration is apparent also in the desire for stronger laws. The findings overall show that immigrants feel well integrated into British society and are committed to being "British. The author also discusses his views on the results of the study.
