Goldfinch, v11 n4 Apr 1990
This journal issue covers the history of film, radio, and television in Iowa. The first article, "When Pictures and Sound Came to Iowa," summarizes the origin of movies and radio and their early beginnings in Iowa. Using old photographs and measurement charts, the viewing, reading, and listening habits of young people in 1950 and 1958 are illustrated in, "What Were the Kids Doing?""What's Showing at the Bijou," discusses early entertainment in Iowa and is accompanied by a "Favorite Pastime" chart allowing comparison between children in 1938 and 1986. "Radio Comes to Iowa" describes early radio programs, beginning with 1922. An scrambled word game of popular television programs, a list of Iowans' favorite screen stars, movies, and an article, "Classrooms on the Air," contain classroom activities. The final essay, "Writing Women Back into History," won first place in a sixth and seventh grade contest and is a youngster's tribute to her aunt. Directions for constructing a Zoetrope, a device that led to the invention of movies, and numerous photographs and illustrations conclude the magazine. (NL)
