The University of Florida (UF) used an open-source course management system (CMS) called Sakai. Sakai was the fourth CMS the university has used to help teach live, blended (or hybrid), and online courses over the past ten years. The objective of this dissertation was to identify what barriers may be preventing university personnel from using technology (i.e. the course management software). The hypothesis here is that the barriers associated with this technology will also apply to other technologies. Thus, the focus on the course management system serves as a proxy for technology in general. The research outlined in the study was to allow for the identity of variables (barriers) which influenced university personnel's willingness of using technology in their academic teachings. Data was collected using a survey distributed electronically to personnel at UF who had registered for (but not necessarily attended) training in technology at the University of Florida. A multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to determine what variables could influence the Perception of Use of technology as part of the academic teaching environment. A logistic regression analysis was also conducted to determine the probability that a given variable could positively or negatively affect the Use Behavior of technology in the academic teaching environment. The conclusion for Use Behavior indicated only Performance Expectancy developed a barrier. The conclusion for Perception of Use indicated the covariant Experience, as it related to the perception of use, dictated a barrier related to university personnel perception of use of technology.
