Self-Help Barrio High Schools: The Story of 250,000 Students Learning Their Education and Preparing Themselves for Life.
Orata, Pedro T.
An innovative approach toward providing an opportunity for high school education in the Philippines that could also serve as a model in the developing countries is described in this volume. In small rural areas of the Philippines where education at the high school level had been unobtainable for most, communities established, supported, and operated self-help schools which are financed from sources entirely within the community, utilizing local resources and talents of local people with the parents and pupils undertaking financial support. As part of his school work in which academic subjects are coordinated with practical subjects, each child undertakes a money making project that requires one or more manual, agricultural, or commercial skills. Wages earned for carrying out the project are used for tuition and other school expenses. Existing educational facilities are maximized by making use of elementary school buildings when rooms are free, and making use of the elementary school teachers and members of the community with appropriate skills. Information is included on the goal of universal education in the Philippines; objectives, organization, and support of the high schools; teaching students to make practical and ethical use of the sciences; training students to work to earn their school expenses and to contribute to economic development; and tested solutions to ongoing problems and future prospects of barrio high schools.
