Progress Monitoring for the Gifted and Talented: A Mixed Methods Examination of Response to Intervention
Eckberg, Lynn Ann
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The mixed methods correlational study examined the problem that AYP of Pennsylvania gifted middle school students who have met state-mandated proficiency requirements under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) has been reliant upon minimum proficiency tests. The purpose of the mixed methods study was to examine the correlations between the current measure used to determine AYP in gifted middle school students: Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) test scores in reading and mathematics and (a) 4Sight scores in reading and mathematics, and (b) final course percentages in reading and mathematics. Additionally, Response to Intervention (RtI) was examined as an alternative measure to the current method to monitor AYP. The Pearson correlation in the quantitative component resulted in scores that were statistically significant and varied from 0.521-0.778 (p > 0.05). Results indicated that PSSA scores in reading and math correlate about as well with 4Sight scores in reading and math as final course percentages in reading and math do. The qualitative component, which was an open-ended survey of 12 teacher's perceptions about the use of RtI as an alternate measure of the AYP of gifted middle school students. Responses indicated that participants supported RtI as a more effective way to determine a student's AYP than the current measure. Further, participants reported that interventions are critical for student success. Recommendations for practice include professional development for skill acquisition of data collection methods and data analysis and collaboration between RtI team members as well as ongoing administrative support towards skill acquisition after implementation of RtI. Recommendations for future research include a regression study of the 4Sight as a predictor for gifted student AYP, a case study of content area teachers of science and social studies and use of student data, and the quantitative portion of the study be replicated with a larger sample.
