Prospective Foreign Language Teachers' Preference of Teaching Methods for the Language Acquisition Course in Turkish Higher Education
GüvendIr, Emre
Education, v134 n1 p25-34 Fall 2013
Considering the significance of taking student preferences into account while organizing teaching practices, the current study explores which teaching method prospective foreign language teachers mostly prefer their teacher to use in the language acquisition course. A teaching methods evaluation form that includes six commonly used teaching methods was administered to 119 third and fourth year teacher trainees. Data were scaled based on rank order judgments of the participants. The findings of the study show that the participants preferred "the case method" as the most suitable means of learning language acquisition course content. This method was followed by "the discussion method", "the lecture method", "the demonstration-performance method", "the problem solving method", and "the independent study method". Since it creates an awareness of student preferences, the study is significant for higher education faculty who are charged with teaching the language acquisition course to prospective foreign language teachers.
