Job Satisfaction of Secondary Content Area Leaders
Roberts, Christine K.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Aurora University
Educational researchers have examined both observed and perceived influences of the job satisfaction levels of secondary teachers and post-secondary department chairs. However, researchers have largely ignored a third group of educators: secondary Content Area Leaders (CALs). The overall satisfaction levels and the potentially influencing factors on CALs' job satisfaction, in a northern Illinois county, were investigated in this quantitative study. Differences between groups within each factor were also investigated. The Hoppock Job Satisfaction Scale No. 5 was used to determine overall satisfaction levels. Results indicated that the CALs in the selected northern Illinois county were more satisfied than not with their jobs. The investigation of potentially influencing factors was accomplished through a combination of overall Hoppock scores and information gained through a General Survey of identified factors. A positive, linear trend in Hoppock scores, based on respondents' age groups, indicates that older CALs are more satisfied than their younger peers. A parallel trend was seen in respondents who spent more time in the classroom prior to becoming a CAL, indicating that a greater length of experience as a teacher may lead to higher levels of CAL job satisfaction. Time, and whether or not a CAL works with the support of a mentor, were also identified as contributing factors to job satisfaction levels of secondary CALs. The current study establishes only baseline data. As such, further study of this group of educators is necessary.
