Margaret Howell: An Outstanding Teacher of English in the Workplace. Occasional Paper Number 14.
Wales, M. L.
This report highlights the career and accomplishments of Margaret Howell, an English teacher in Australia who was instrumental in the development of English language learning for non-native speakers in the workplace. Material used was gathered in 1986, 1989, and 1992 interviews before her death of cancer in 1992. A chronological account of her courses and a listing of issues to be faced in this area of English-as-a-Second-Language instruction are provided. She was originally a primary school teacher with a special interest in arts and crafts and college degrees in psychology and Italian. Her teaching approaches are detailed. Over her career, she taught in hospitals, in telecommunication companies and other multinational businesses, and hotels. Her teaching methodology was highlighted by an adult approach, a global, integrated approach; the full involvement of all levels of management; employee advancement; assisting the industry itself; and an active, flexible classroom. Appendixes include a listing of problems with English in the workplace, comments from employees; a report on a course with a telecommunications company; student reports on the course; and a tribute from colleagues.
