Visual Education in the Primary School.
Pickering, John M.
How to develop children's awareness of tactile and visual experience is the subject of this book, intended for primary school teachers and parents of young children. The purpose is to present experiences which will stimulate children's curiosity about their world and enrich their perception. Beginning with the first tactile and textural contacts a child has with the world, a series of activities is listed to help increase the child's sensitivity to differences in surfaces and textures. Then the observation and study of motion in everyday activities are examined and ways of showing movement in artwork are suggested. Also discussed are time and how it changes objects and space and the recognition of shapes. The relationship of light and color, the comparison of colors, and reflections are the final subjects. Projects are suggested throughout, and the emphasis is on classroom activity which will make use of a child's everyday experiences. (Author/JK)
