Hybrid computation facilities have been in operation at Louisiana State University since the spring of 1969. In part, they consist of an Electronics Associates, Inc. (EAI) Model 680 analog computer, an EAI Model 693 interface, and a Xerox Data Systems (XDS) Sigma 5 digital computer. The hybrid laboratory is used in a course on hybrid computation and is also used for demonstration in short-courses and workshops on mathematical modeling and optimization, automatic control theory, and digital control. Open-shop operation of the laboratory has been quite successful, and graduate students and faculty members find it convenient to use the laboratory in their research projects. Highlight of the first six months of operation has been the small amount of maintenance required. The weak link in the system is the software. One of the questions that arose was whether symbolic (assembly) language should be taught to engineers in the hybrid computation course. All the students seemed to enjoy the course, although the consensus was that it was a lot of work. (MF)
