Seizures and Teens: Surgery for Seizures--What's It All About?
Duchowny, Michael S.; Dean, Patricia
Exceptional Parent, v36 n12 p73-75 Dec 2006
Nearly 1 out of 2 children and teens with seizures may need to take medications throughout their lives. At least 25% will develop a condition called refractory epilepsy--meaning that their seizures do not respond to medical therapy. For these children and teens, non-drug therapies such as brain surgery are available that may offer a chance to eliminate or reduce seizures and improve quality of life. This article will discuss ways of treating seizures with surgery and highlight critical points that teens and their families should consider.
