The report, over half of which consists of appendixes and lists of resources, discusses the educational and related life experiences of six disabled women. Focus is on their early experiences with school and family, their high school years, their college years, and their work. Their disabilities include blindness, osteogenesis imperfecta (fragile bones), paralysis, cerebral palsy, and deafness. Among the suggestions made to parents and educators are those involving the lack of positive images of disabled female children and adults in the community and in school books, films, and other media; the feelings of being treated differently than non-disabled children; the feelings of awkwardness, self-consciousness, and lack of self-confidence; and a lack of information about future career possibilities. Among the types of resources listed are groups, guides, periodicals, articles and books, and nonprint media. Included in the appendixes are a discussion of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (P.L. 94-142), a discussion of the rights of the handicapped, and guidelines for the representation of handicapped persons in educational materials.
