Test Review: Abidin, R. R. (2012) "Parenting Stress Index, Fourth Edition" ("PSI-4"). Lutz, Florida: Psychological Assessment Resources
Johnson, Alyce O.
Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, v33 n7 p698-702 Oct 2015
The "Parenting Stress Index, Fourth Edition" (PSI-4) is a 120-item measure used to explore parental stress levels considering a parent's relationship with one of his or her children between the ages of 1 month and 12 years. The main purpose of the test is to define these stress levels and from where they originate in order to identify the potential or already-occurring behavioral and/or emotional disturbances of the child. This test review discusses the technical adequacy of the test through the consideration of the following: (1) test construction and item analysis; (2) normative sample; (3) reliability; and (4) validity. The review's author states that the content validity of the PSI-4 is strong, but evidence of construct validity is sparse. Although the PSI-4 has a few shortcomings that include lack of clarity in the test manual, the test is one that can provide invaluable information, and may be able to aid clinicians in proper diagnoses. Furthermore, the PSI-4 uniquely provides a visual of stress patterns and may aid the design of treatment plans for individuals who require clinical attention.
