Beyond Numbers: Making AYP One Student at a Time
Morrison, Heath E.; Morrison, Jennifer D.; Bedford, Stephen
Principal Leadership, v7 n6 p26-31 Feb 2007
Recently, Argyle Middle School in Montgomery County, Maryland faced the prospect of corrective action for failure to make adequate yearly progress (AYP) under the No Child Left Behind Act. The county's Office of School Performance designed the Strategic Monitoring/Intervention Process to help schools identify students' academic progress both individually and by NCLB subgroups and to align student needs with preexisting or newly created interventions. It consists of ten steps that take administrators through the process of identifying the size of the gap between current and expected performance, determining the best type of intervention for individual students in need of help, and monitoring individual and group progress. This process has since helped numerous schools that were facing state-mandated corrective action improve their strategies for making AYP. (Contains 3 figures.)
