Educational Architecture in Ohio: From One-Room Schools and Carnegie Libraries to Community Education Villages.
McCormick, Virginia E.
This book examines the evolution of Ohio's educational institutions from one-room schoolhouses to modern educational campuses, reflecting Ohio's population growth and its shared culture and traditions. Ohio's heritage, pioneer settlers, immigrant diversity, and strategic location for westward migration are discussed. A unique perspective for viewing and interpreting education with an architectural perspective is offered and educational trends and changes, revealing the rise in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries of lifelong learning and public access to information are examined. The rising professionalism among educators, architects, and librarians that created competing philosophies regarding architectural form and function is revealed. Finally, this document shows how a consensus developed holding that learning environments that inspire excitement among teachers and students reflect communities that support the educational mission. Appendixes include: "Timeline of Selected Educational Highlights in Ohio"; "Architects/Builders of Featured Buildings"; and "Ohio; Educational Sites on National Register of Historic Places." (GR)
