This questionnaire study examined the level of knowledge of first aid of 138 educators in private and state preschools in Turkey. Questionnaires were completed by educators between May and July 1997. The findings indicated that about 17 percent of the educators thought that they had sufficient first aid knowledge, with 62 percent indicating that they had no first aid training. About 68 percent of the educators had encountered situations in the preschool in which they had to administer first aid. A greater number of educators who had received first aid training than those without training described the correct procedure for dealing with a number of injury situations, including nose bleeds, fractures, and drinking caustic substances. In addition, significantly more university than high school graduates gave correct answers for dealing with stopping of respiration, electrical shock, fractures, drinking caustic substances, and insect stings and bites. The results suggest that first aid training is necessary for all educators. (KB)
