Children begin forming social and emotional intelligence at birth. They need the support of a caring adult at first, and then later interactions with peers, in order to encounter the experiences that will guide their brain development in the social and emotional domains. With the help and input of others, children begin to understand, express, and regulate their own emotions. As they fine-tune their understanding of their emotions, they become skilled in recognizing social cues provided by teachers and peers. With appropriate and adequate opportunities to practice interacting with others, children eventually learn to form relationships and play and learn together in groups. By coaching children to develop the seven critical social and emotional skills--confidence, curiosity, self-control, cooperation, communication, relatedness and intentionality--they will be prepared for school and for life.
