International Reader in the Management of Library, Information and Archive Services.
Vaughan, Anthony, Comp.
Compiled for the benefit of library, archive, and information science schools for use in their information services and systems management courses, this reader is not meant to replace the already existing standard textbooks on this subject, but to provide a more international perspective than textbooks written with the information services of one particular country in mind. The 57 articles in this collection are divided into seven categories: (1) Management, Information, and Development (includes administration in developing countries and a case study on the management of information in China); (2) Managing Information: Introduction (covers management of an information service and record management); (3) Planning the Service (includes state and local constraints on planning, public relations, needs of users, and marketing); (4) Organization and Control (covers organization and communication, specialization in information work, centralized vs. decentralized services, and self-management in the information service); (5) Management of Staff (covers personnel administration, human relations in personnel administration, career opportunities, the job description, recruiting and supervising staff, training and developing staff, appraisal of staff, technical and junior staff, human problems in information work, participatory management, and workers' councils and trade unions); (6) Management of Financial and Physical Resources (covers budgeting, security, and the design of library and archive buildings); and (7) Evaluation and Change (includes evaluation of effectiveness and three specific examples of evaluations). Flowcharts and/or references are provided in individual articles. (SD)
