Lyon, Juana P., Comp.
A culmination of the efforts of many Indian and concerned non-Indian people, the conference, attended by almost 1,500 American Indians and Alaska Natives representing 171 tribes, aimed to promote effective and adequate services needed by the Indian elderly. Based on input from the Indian community and service providers, five concurrent workshops were scheduled to address the topics of income, environment, legal problems, physical well-being, and legislation. This report presents discussions of the: events which led to the conference; recommendations and resolutions submitted into the conference record; conference objectives and agenda; organization of workshops; background of the conference recommendations; implications and the follow-up. Also included are the highlights of conference background, planning, implementation, and evaluation; the questionnaire given to the Indian community and a summary of the responses; and the responses by the Administration on Aging at the regional and state levels. Appendices include discussions of the historical and legal perspectives of Tribal sovereignty and Tribal government, the National Congress of American Indians' position on aging concerns, the Indian Health Care Improvement Act, and social services to Indians through Title XX; comparative population data for Indians aged 65 and over living on identified reservations in selected states; statistical data of such tribes as the Mississippi Band of Choctaws, St. Regis Mohawk, Jicarilla Apache, and Miccosukee; and testimonies before various committees and subcommittees on aging.
