Domain 1: Philosophy and Ethics National Standards for Sport Coaches
Jones, Dianne C.
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v17 n4 p23-24 Mar-Apr 2004
Developing a sound coaching philosophy and displaying ethical behavior is the backbone of effective coaching at any level. Coaches cannot communicate the standards of behavior they expect from their athletes or coaching staff if they have not identified the priorities and values associated with their coaching philosophy. When reflecting on Domain 1, Pam Ruder (Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh) said, "A sound coaching philosophy and ethical conduct is the cornerstone of an effective coaching career." A well-developed coaching philosophy, which is athlete-centered, and includes ethical conduct by all those involved in the sport program, better ensures that the athletes will learn valuable life lessons. These life lessons will endure regardless of whether the team had a winning or losing season. This paper discusses the key areas of Domain 1, Philosophy and Ethics which include: (1) Developing an athlete-centered coaching philosophy; (2) Identifying and teaching positive values through sport; (3) Demonstrating ethical conduct in interactions with athletes, officials and other coaches; and (4) Reinforcing appropriate athletic behavior.
