Helping General Physical Educators and Adapted Physical Educators Address the Office of Civil Rights Dear Colleague Guidance Letter: Part II--What Parents Should Know and Do to Ensure Extracurricular Interscholastic Sport Opportunities for Their Children with Disabilities
Tymeson, Garth
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v84 n8 p24-26 2013
The rights of all students to participate in extracurricular programs are required by current law but are often nonexistent, misunderstood, or even sometimes purposely not shared with parents. This article is addressed to parents regarding the rights of their children with disabilities to participate in extracurricular sport activities. Included is a sample letter that can be used as a guide when meeting with district special-education administrators. Federal law entitles children with disabilities to participate in extracurricular services and activities and it will likely not happen unless parents get actively involved in seeking these as part of their child's individualized education Program (IEP). School personnel will not always present this information to parents who need to become the informed advocate. Part II of the feature provides suggestions for parents to consider enacting with their local school district administration related to the inclusion of extracurricular sports on their child's individualized education program.
