To Encourage Development of the Critical Thinking Skills for Third Grade Elementary Students.
Harris, Noel V.
A resource teacher working at an elementary school located on a military reservation implemented an 8-week practicum intervention designed to improve the critical thinking skills of 16 third graders. A task force composed of resource and classroom teachers, a guidance counselor, a reading curriculum supervisor, a school psychologist, a principal, and the director of the program for exceptional children produced a two-tiered Acceleration and/or Enrichment Program designed to challenge gifted and talented students. Students participating in a unit of study on Aviation and the Future of Space Exploration were provided access to a resource room providing curriculum enrichment, individual instruction, emphasis on the higher mental processes of divergent thinking and creativity, independent study, problem-solving projects with real products, and alternative techniques that offered a change from the routine of the regular classroom. Evaluation data showed that students made progress in each of the thinking skills addressed: comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. A total of 47 references are cited. Appendices include a program brochure, the unit outline, classroom materials, and activities for building thinking skills. (RH)
