Recent incidents of school violence have brought bullying to the nation's attention in a dramatic way. Research shows that approximately 30% of teens in the United States either bully, are targets of bullying, or both (National Youth, n.d.). Bullying causes adverse physical, psychological, and social effects. It erodes feelings of self-worth and can have traumatic, long-lasting consequences. Victims are at risk for becoming withdrawn and depressed and may disconnect from school, which can lead to absences, truancy, and even dropping out. Experts have found that disruptions in a victim's education correspond with reduced career prospects and earning potential (Osofsky, 2001). Given the frequency of bullying, the number of students involved, and the degree to which their education is affected, educators have powerful incentive to eliminate bullying from schools. This paper presents recommendations for school administrators on how they may deal with bullying.
