Implementation Into Curriculum of Wilderness Adventure Program. Summer of 1978.
Bonney, James D.
Environmental awareness, one of eleven components of a Wilderness Adventure Program, is the focus of this guide for teachers. Introductory sections put forth the philosophy and goals of the program and list specific objectives for its components, which include first-aid, emergency preparedness, outdoor skills, and the outdoor solo experience. The program stresses the development of positive attitudes toward the environment and the acquisiton of knowledge and skills that will foster responsible use of the environment. Goals of the environmental awareness unit emphasize environmental stewardship, informed interest in environmental issues, and communication of environmental concerns. Subject matter of the unit, suitable for junior and senior high school students, includes resource conservation, recycling, waste disposal, solar energy, land use, and current environmental issues. The unit furnishes instructional objectives accompanied by learning activities, resources, and methods of evaluating student progress. Collecting news items, writing Congressmen about environmental legislation, and charting home water use are among the suggested learning activities. Evaluation tools contained in the guide are the Tennessee Self Concept Scale, a questionnaire administered before and after the complete Wilderness Adventure Program, and a test for the environmental awareness unit.
