Livin' off the Grid: Solar Decathlon Is as Green as It Gets!
Peckham, Susanne
Tech Directions, v68 n9 p14-15 Apr 2009
In this article, the author talks about the Solar Decathlon, a competition in which 20 teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. Previously held in 2002, 2005, and 2007, the Solar Decathlon has grown into one of the most highly anticipated design competitions ever held. The 2009 Solar Decathlon will be held in the National Mall in Washington, DC, from October 1-21. The drama and excitement will grow throughout the 21-day event until a winner is determined. Competition sponsors--the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and DOE's National Renewable Laboratory--note that for all the teams, the satisfaction of knowing that their houses could influence the design and construction of future housing makes everyone a winner. Countries represented in the 2009 Decathlon include the United States (including Puerto Rico), Canada, Germany, and Spain.
