Mission IM-Possible: Starting an Instant Message Reference Service Using Trillian
Ciocco, Ronalee; Huff, Alice
Computers in Libraries, v27 n1 p26-31 Jan 2007
The authors, both of whom are working at the Musselman library, relate how they are always looking for ways to improve and update their reference service. When they introduced a chat reference service to their online library services, they received only four inquiries in the entire year 2002-2003. The authors found out later that the paltry number of questions was due to the cumbersome nature of the chat reference software--it was too much trouble to use the interface. They discovered later the possibilities of AOL Instant Messenger (IM) after they talked with Wendy Juniper, a reference librarian at Moravian College. In December 2004, they started to try using IM to communicate with students and realized its positive potentials. In this article, they discuss how they implemented GettLibraryHelp, an instant message reference service using Trillian software. They also discuss the results of the project and the students' impressions of GettLibraryHelp. (Contains 6 endnotes.)
