Human Development Program: Level V Activity Guide.
Ball, Geraldine
The curriculum guide presents the activities component of the Human Development Program for grade 5. The Human Development Program (HDP) is an affective curricular approach developed by psychologists to help teachers instill responsibility and self-confidence in children. The activity guide presents topics and directions for 180 sequential Human Development Sessions in which teachers and students sit in a circle (called a Magic Circle) for 20 minutes each day to talk about feelings. Topics are based upon awareness, self-confidence, and social interaction. The major objectives are to encourage children to show acceptance of themselves and others, and to listen to and focus upon the feelings of others. Fifth grade activities stress self-reliance, flexible attitudes and behavior, trusting relationships, sense of personal identity, and awareness of the complexities of social situations. Topics include having many kinds of self-control, knowing how to get attention, doing what I am supposed to do, feeling like saying something but keeping it to myself, and pretending I am listening when I am not. The guide presents information to teachers on how to prepare the Magic Circle session, explain the topic for discussion, lead the daily session, encourage children to volunteer to lead a session, and help the children review, summarize, and evaluate what they learned.
