Report and Recommendations on Adolescent Pregnancy in Mississippi.
Mississippi Governor's Office of Federal-State Programs, Jackson.
This document contains the conclusions and recommendations of a task force established to review the status of adolescent pregnancy and childbearing in Mississippi and to make recommendations for programs and policies that would serve to prevent or lessen the negative impact of adolescent pregnancy. The introduction of the report presents statistics on adolescent pregnancies nationally and in Mississippi. The next section examines the economic impact of teenage pregnancy. Task force findings and recommendations are provided in five sections: (1) family and youth awareness; (2) community awareness; (3) health; (4) education; and (5) support services. A summary notes that services currently offered to at-risk teenagers, pregnant teenagers, and parenting teenagers are inadequate and unevenly distributed in the state and that there is no network for existing programs to exchange information. The report calls for a core service support system which would work to identify at-risk adolescents; provide services to at-risk, pregnant, and parenting adolescents and their families; and provide complete services for life planning through a case management approach. Data tables illustrate the 1984 teenage pregnancy rate by county and provide information on low birth weight babies, out-of-wedlock births, prenatal care, and teenage births by age and race. (NB)
