A Design Approach to Teaching Persuasion: Theory and Application.
Neal, W. Patrick; And Others
One course in persuasion reviews six theories of attitude change--five based on Otto Lerbinger's designs for persuasive communication (cognitive design, stimulus response design, motivational design, personality design, and social design), and a sixth (perceptual design) developed by the instructors. Instruction in each includes a variety of classroom exercises based on research relevant to the unit under consideration. Grading in the course began as contract grading in which the grade the student wanted and the activities and projects to be completed for that grade were agreed upon ahead of time. This has been modified to a system in which certain minimum requirements have been established for all students and those who wish a grade higher than "C" can complete any of several optional assignments.
