San Jose State University is planning to ban Skype, a popular Internet telephone service, from the campus network because of concerns about security and bandwidth. University administrators say that the technical aspects that make Skype effective also make it dangerous and potentially crippling to a university's network bandwidth. Skype has a variety of features, most of them free, that appear to give it an edge on its Internet-telephone competitors. Students can use it to swap songs or movies and to send instant messages, along with the standard voice calls that let students practice foreign languages and to call home, even when home is India or China. Professors can use Skype to participate in academic conferences or to make free or inexpensive long-distance calls to research collaborators. After hearing complaints from students and faculty members, and after negotiating with Skype officials, the university did not enact the ban. But while San Jose State and Skype found a way to keep the service on the university's network, the debate over Skype continues on many campuses.
