A 1977 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) survey investigated how libraries were training personnel for routine tasks. Of the 73 responding libraries, more than 75% (58) reported that manuals and procedural guides, along with on-the-job training, were the main methods of instruction for technical skills. Accordingly, this kit on skills training in ARL libraries contains 11 documents from member libraries grouped in 3 clusters: (1) manuals/procedures: on bibliographic searches from Texas A&M, circulation procedures from University of Tennessee/Knoxville, periodicals processing from Syracuse University, emergency procedures from Pennsylvania State University, and interlibrary loans from University of Wisconsin/Madison; (2) trainers' guides: on orientation for new reference librarians from University of Georgia, training clerical supervisors from Branch Libraries of the New York Public Library, and filing workshop and evaluation forms from Columbia University, plus a staff performance evaluation from McGill University; and (3) training program materials, including sample pages from a programmed filing text from Rutgers University and a self diagnostic test on reading call letters from University of Hawaii. A concise summary of issues and trends in skills training and a listing of training materials compiled from the Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) 1977 survey introduce this collection of documents from member libraries.
