Performance Appraisals: One Step in a Comprehensive Staff Supervision Model
Kilbourne, Susan
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n174 p34-37 Mar-Apr 2007
Performance reviews, while stressful, can prepare employees for the next stages of their career. The best performance reviews are those where the supervisor knows the employee's skills and talents and offers suggestions on how to use those talents to develop other areas of job performance and professional growth. In this article, the author discusses the interview and orientation process, as well as ongoing performance reviews. She also presents the purposes of performance appraisals: (1) They give employees the opportunity to discuss their performance with their supervisor, comparing it to the organizational standards set by the supervisor and the organization; (2) Performance appraisals give the supervisor a means to discuss and identify the strengths and challenges for each employee; and (3) The performance review provides the supervisor with a basis for salary recommendations.
