Report on the Status of Outstanding Translated Children's Picture Books in the U.S.A.
White, Maureen
Comparison of data and findings from a current study on successful translated children's books published between 1990-2000 with an older study on successful translated children's books prior to 1990 allows conclusions to be drawn as to trends in publishing related to language, genre, subjects, and reviews of outstanding translated books and translated picture books. The majority of outstanding translated children's books, including picture books, continue to come from the German and French languages, reflecting the close ties of language, culture, and literature in those countries. The large number of Swedish titles is a result of cooperative ventures between Farrar, Straus, and Giroux and the Swedish publisher, Raben and Sjogren. Subjects with universal appeal (such as animal personification) are the subjects of translated children's picture books. There is an outstanding selection of picture books from all genres, subjects, and from a variety of languages being published. (Contains 4 tables, 12 references, and an extensive bibliography of translated children's picture books.) (NKA)
