The Origins of African-American Family Structure.
Ruggles, Steven
American Sociological Review, v59 n1 p136-51 Feb 1994
Uses the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series to trace race differences in African American family structure between 1880 and 1980. Confirms a long-standing high incidence rate of single parenthood and children residing without their parents. Data also show blacks have had a consistently higher percentage of extended households than have whites. (GLR)
