Critical Literacy: A Collection of Articles from the Australian Literacy Educators' Association.
Fehring, Heather, Ed.; Green, Pam, Ed.
This compilation of one new article and 11 previously published articles from the Australian Literacy Educators' Association offers diverse perspectives on critical literacy. The articles explain the principles of critical literacy from a theoretical perspective, illustrate the comparative changes between theories of literacy development, detail the practical implementation of critical literacy principles, and highlight the changing role of the teacher in the process of students coming to understand the multiple meanings of texts and the power of language. Following an introduction by the editors, articles are: "Critical Literacy Revisited" (Pam Green); "Critical Literacy/Socially Perceptive Literacy: A Study of Language in Action" (James Paul Gee); "No Single Meaning: Empowering Students To Construct Socially Critical Readings of the Text" (Ann Kempe); "The Crediting of Literate Competence in Classroom Talk" (Carolyn D. Baker and Peter Freebody); "(Sub)versions: Using Sexist Language Practices To Explore Critical Literacy" (Pam Gilbert); "Critical Literacy and Children's Literature: Exploring the Story of Aladdin" (Anne Hanzl); "Classroom Explorations in Critical Literacy" (Barbara Comber); "Torres Strait Islanders Speak: Building a Model of Critical Literacy" (Stephen van Harskamp-Smith and Karen van Harskamp-Smith); "Making Community Texts Objects of Study" (Allan Luke; Jennifer O'Brien; Barbara Comber); "'...and What about the Boys?' Re-reading Signs of Masculinities" (Grant Webb and Michael Singh); "Critical Literacy and Pop Music Magazines" (Lorraine Wilson); and "Literacy and the New Technologies in School Education: Meeting the L(IT)eracy Challenge?" (Cal Durrant and Bill Green). Appended are seven critical literacy book reviews. (NKA)
