The parent education materials in this packet are intended for use by professionals, and some paraprofessionals, who work with children from birth through 5 years of age and with their families. Included are guidelines for choosing playthings for children of any age, and lists of suggested toys for children of various ages, and, in particular, handicapped children. The contents also provide information on child development from birth through 5 years of age, and suggestions about playing with children during each of the first five years. Further information and recommendations are offered for the matters of discipline, sibling rivalry, reading aloud to children, and safety. Included in the packet are a booklist of related readings and a list of additional resources to be made available to parents during mini-workshops. (RH)
