Adolescent sexuality and its consequences weigh on the minds of adolescents. School environments play an important role in preventing these consequences because students' feelings of a sense of belonging within the school have been linked with decreased risky behavior. Acknowledging this link, the National Education Association Health Information Network wishes to develop a curriculum for teachers-in-training to enable them to adequately discuss issues of sexuality with students. This study attempted to determine what teachers-in-training already know and what information they need by administering a cross-sectional survey to NEA student members. The results indicated that very few teachers-in-training are required to take courses covering sexual health, that the majority of teachers-in-training understand the connection between an adolescents' decision to engage in sexual activity and her/his school performance, that teachers-in-training anticipate questions relating to sexuality being raised in the classroom and want to be prepared to answer these questions, that they know some information about adolescent sexuality but could benefit from more training and that they inaccurately see how important certain issues relating to health and safety are to teens. Because of problems with survey distribution, the results obtained from this study should not be taken as an accurate description of teachers-in-training and the study should be repeated before a curriculum is developed. Recommendations of changes to be made when the study is repeated are also given. (Contains 4 tables and 1 figure.)
