Analysis of questionnaire responses of minority, foreign, and white graduate students at the Oklahoma State University (OSU) found that most had a positive perception of their university environment. The questionnaire was sent to a total of 920 potential respondents, of whom 284 (31%) returned completed and usable instruments. The instrument covered the following variables: the quality of orientation information and financial aid information available to students; encouragement/assistance in applying for financial aid; experiences or observations of racial or sexual discrimination; faculty and student relations; opportunities for professional development; race relations; research committee selection and maintenance; and student services. Results of the survey found that regardless of ethnicity or college affiliation respondents positively perceived 5 of the 10 environmental factors. Analysis by college found that some colleges received higher ratings than others with regard to orientation information. Analysis by ethnic group found patterns similar to those observed with the college based analysis. Intercorrelations also indicated that students perceived some variables to be related. It is concluded that, although OSU graduate students have a positive perception of their university environment, several areas need improvement, e.g.: information and assistance regarding financial assistance programs; professional development or enrichment opportunities; and graduate student orientation.
