Cappello, Dominic; Newberry, Jerald
This English and Spanish language multimedia packet comprises an educational curriculum designed to help families talk about self-esteem, sex, and peer pressure with their children in grades 4 through 8. The packet consists of a planning and training manuals, family activity books, and a videotape. The curriculum is comprised of four parent workshops providing an opportunity for families and educators to address HIV prevention, teen pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases in a healthy, proactive, and constructive manner before children become sexually active. Each one-hour workshop focuses on developing communication and problem-solving skills through interactive discussion and activities. The planning and training manual is presented in four sections. Section 1 provides an overview of the curriculum and includes discussion of its guiding principles, methods for evaluating progress, the power of partnerships, a community lesson plan, and training tips. Section 2 is a marketing toolkit designed to help secure workshop sponsors and promote the workshops to parents. Section 3 presents the workshops on the following topics: (1) self-esteem; (2) puberty and sexuality; (3) mixed messages about sexuality in the media; and (4) peer pressure. The section includes training objectives, trainer tips, step-by-step instructions for introducing the videotape segments and conducting the activities, videotape transcripts, suggestions for discussing the follow-up home activity, and evaluation forms for the parent workshops and for the training package. Section 4 contains a copy of the family activity book for photocopying. This family activity book gives parents home activities to do with their children after each workshop, additional information related to human sexuality, reproduction, sexually transmitted diseases, and sex education. A list of organizations for additional information and support concludes the family activity book. The videotape contains five 60-second animated stories. The first story serves as a marketing tool and as an opener for each workshop session. The remaining four stories present family conversations on the workshop topics. (KB)
