Friends' Discovery Camp
Seymour, Seth
Exceptional Parent, v38 n3 p24-25 Mar 2008
This article features Friends' Discovery Camp, a program that allows children with and without autism spectrum disorder to learn and play together. In Friends' Discovery Camp, campers take part in sensory-rich experiences, ranging from hands-on activities and performing arts to science experiments and stories teaching social skills. Now in its 7th year, the camp takes place every summer in the fun, kid-friendly atmosphere of the Creative Discovery Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Summer camps, like Friends' Discovery Camp, help to create independence, boost self-esteem, and form the special friendships that everyone--regardless of ability--desires. Questions to ask when choosing a camp for children with disabilities and 10 helpful hints to prepare a child with special needs for camp are presented.
