A Final Organizational Communication Project: Using the Television Series "The Office" to Engage College Students
Franzini, Amy
Communication Teacher, v21 n4 p132-135 Oct 2007
One of the most effective ways to help students integrate classroom knowledge they have gained in an Organizational Communication class is for students to put that knowledge literally "to work" through analysis of an actual organization. However, unlimited entry into a "real" organization's communication systems is sometimes limited and often intimidating to young undergraduates. In addition, students may hesitate to be totally honest with an organization if they find critical communication flaws during their analysis. The television program "The Office" offers students access to an organization in desperate need of organizational communication advice, without the aforementioned intimidation or limited access. Research has suggested that media such as movies and television can be used effectively in the classroom to engage students in myriad ways (Clark, 1983; Clark & Salomon, 1988; Plowman, 1988). By analyzing the communication of the organization fictionalized in "The Office," students not only demonstrate the knowledge gained throughout the course, but become more engaged in the course overall.
