Learning English Through Typewriting.
Gay, Charles W.; And Others
The purpose of this text is to teach typing to students of English as a second language. The authors feel that "the repetition of typing patterns can reinforce language habits, which are mastered through repetition. Conversely, language drills such as pattern practice will automatically increase typing speed and accuracy." Students will also practice their knowledge of English spelling, vocabulary, and conventions of paragraphing and punctuation while learning to type. Unit I (lessons 1-15) introduces the typewriter keyboard and presents seven basic sentence patterns. These patterns are described ("Pattern Two has a noun subject, a linking verb, and an adjective subject complement or predicate adjective") and then examples of the pattern are given in the typing practice. The 15 lessons in Unit II present and practice: question transformations, the passive, "there", relative and subordinate clauses, appositives, verbal groups, and conjunctions and sentence connectors. The third Unit, eight lessons, gives practice in the proper form for typing business and personal letters and simple manuscripts. The text is intended for use either in the classroom or for individual study. Prerecorded tapes have been prepared for use of the text without a teacher. All illustrations and instructions refer to an elite, manual typewriter. (JD)
