The current recession has hit American workers hard. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, ten percent of the U.S. workforce is unemployed (as of November 2009), the highest rate since April 1983. In addition, the labor market is experiencing record rates in the length of time job hunters remain unemployed, while companies receive hundreds of applications for each posting. Just as the economy of the 1930s witnessed the shift from farming to manufacturing, this era is seeing the changeover to highly skilled jobs. Job search strategies have also changed with the times. For the unemployed, libraries have become their primary sources of job-hunting and career information. Libraries can assist job seekers by providing sources of job listings, dispensing resume and job-search advice, and starting job clubs/networking groups. However, career and job-search collections in libraries are sometimes neglected and contain outdated materials. As the number of job seekers grows, an up-to-date collection is a necessity. This article presents a bibliography that offers a selection of great new books and useful web sites that will give one a well-rounded, current collection to serve job seekers in community.
