Schaumburg Early Education Center (SEEC): Sixth Progress Performance Report 1978-1979. Final Report (Outreach) 1976-1979.
Community Consolidated School District 54, Schaumburg, IL.
The document presents the sixth progress performance report for 1978-1979 and a final outreach report (focusing on demonstration activities) for 1976-1979 for the Schaumburg (Illinois) Early Education Center (SEEC), a Piaget based early education program for 3 to 5 year olds with developmental delays in the following areas: language, social-emotional, motor, and intellectual. Children are screened in a play setting by a multidisciplinary child study team. Learning is seen as a dynamic process in which the child is an active explorer and initiator rather than a passive receiver of knowledge. The child is allowed to learn through acting upon materials and through interaction with peers and adults. The teacher/facilitator enhances the learning process by providing interest centers consisting of a variety of stimulating materials and varied play opportunities for a wide range of developmental levels. Experiences are reflective of the real world, such as splashing in water, rolling in snow, playing dress up, and making toast. Active learning, problem solving, exploration, discovery, and sensory stimulation are provided as integral components. The teacher/facilitator also develops an affective climate which is warm, caring, and accepting to foster a positive self image and self confidence in the child. Parent involvement is also stressed, with individual support and parent education programs a basic SEEC component. (Author/DLS)
