NETWORK. A History of the Scottish Telephone Referral Service.
Smith, Vernon
Since its beginnings in 1974 as an outgrowth of the BBC Adult Literacy project, NETWORK SCOTLAND LTD (formerly the Scottish Telephone Referral Service) has grown to play a key role in the provision of broadcast support and educational information services in the United Kingdom. The referral service was originally established to provide a mechanism for matching tutors with adult learners with difficulties in reading and writing. In the beginning of the 1980s, the service was called upon to promote a number of BBC London-based self-help and adult education programs. The service expansion was, however, still hampered by financial problems. In 1984 the referral service was transformed into NETWORK SCOTLAND LTD, a collaborative venture between such sponsors as BBC Scotland, the Manpower Services Commission, the Scottish Council for Educational Technology, the Scottish Health Education Group, and the Scottish Community Education Council. The network has since serviced broadcast programs and series dealing with such topics as adult literacy, computation skills, writing, quitting smoking, the problems of dropouts, safety, death education, foreign culture, career planning, gardening, prisons, and cancer prevention. (Appendixes include lists of broadcast programs and series serviced between 1975 and 1984, the committee and board membership, and information on finance and staffing.) (MN)
